In this urban Tanzanian population, higher BMI and waist circumference are significantly correlated with adverse lipid profiles and blood pressure in men, but this association is significantly weaker or absent in women.
For men in this population, managing weight is directly linked to managing blood pressure and cholesterol. For women, while weight management is still important for metabolic syndrome, the direct link between weight and blood pressure/lipids is less predictable, suggesting that regular metabolic screening is crucial regardless of BMI.
Among men, body mass index and waist circumference were significantly correlated with CVD risk factors including total and LDL-cholesterol, triglycerides, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, and fasting blood glucose... In contrast, among women, body mass index and waist circumference were not significantly associated with most CVD risk factors; BMI was correlated with SBP and DBP, and waist circumference was associated with DBP.
Why this rating
Cross-sectional design limits causal inference; small sample size may affect statistical power to detect weaker associations in women.

- Initial treatment for type 2 diabetes should be a combination of metformin and either an SGLT-2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist to achieve cardiorenal protection, rather than monotherapy or older agents like sulfonylureas.Strong

- Continued weekly administration of 2.4 mg subcutaneous semaglutide prevents weight regain and promotes further weight loss in adults with overweight or obesity, whereas switching to placebo results in significant weight regain.Strong
