Modern obesity pharmacotherapies (phentermine/topiramate, lorcaserin, bupropion/naltrexone) improve cardiovascular risk factors (blood pressure, lipids, glucose) but their impact on actual cardiovascular events and mortality remains unproven and requires dedicated outcomes trials.
While these medications effectively lower weight and improve markers like blood pressure and blood sugar, they are not yet proven to prevent heart attacks or strokes. They should be viewed as tools for risk factor management rather than guaranteed cardiovascular protection, and their use requires careful monitoring for side effects.
In clinical trials, these drugs cause weight loss and improve glucose tolerance, lipid profile, and, with the exception of bupropion plus naltrexone, blood pressure. However, their effect on cardiovascular outcomes is unknown.
