Performing bariatric surgery during the pre-diabetic or early diabetic stages significantly reduces the incidence of type 2 diabetes and promotes remission, whereas delaying surgery until advanced stages with established complications yields minimal metabolic benefit and higher mortality risk.

If you have obesity and type 2 diabetes (or pre-diabetes), do not wait until your condition is severe or you have complications like kidney or eye damage. Seek bariatric surgery evaluation early. The evidence shows that operating while your diabetes is new or in the pre-diabetic stage offers the highest chance of reversing the disease and preventing long-term damage, whereas waiting until the disease is advanced often fails to provide survival or health benefits.

GoodQualifiesHIGH confidence
Available evidences strongly advocate in favor of the application of bariatric surgery in the early phase of this course, possibly in the pre-diabetic or in very early diabetic stages. To reserve surgery to more advanced and complicated stages of the disease seems to confer less benefits for the clinical course of diabetes and exposes these more frail patients to the possible side effects of a rapid weight loss.
