In people with type 2 diabetes, objectively assessed moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is inversely associated with systemic inflammatory markers IL-6, IL-1ra, and MCP-1, with the association being largely mediated by adiposity (BMI).

For people with Type 2 Diabetes, engaging in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (like brisk walking) for just 10-minute increments daily is associated with lower levels of key inflammatory markers (IL-6, IL-1ra). While weight loss (BMI) plays a significant role in this benefit, the act of moving itself also reduces inflammation through non-weight-related mechanisms. Focus on consistent, moderate-intensity movement rather than just weight loss metrics.

We observed inverse associations between moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (per 10 min) with plasma interleukin-6 (B=−0.035, 95% CI −0.056 to −0.015), interleukin-1ra (B=−0.033, 95% CI −0.051 to −0.015), and monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (B=−0.011, 95% CI −0.021 to 0.000)... These associations largely persisted in multivariable adjusted models, although body mass index considerably attenuated the effect estimate.
