Psychological distress (stress, anxiety, depression) and environmental barriers (food insecurity, poor neighborhood quality) significantly increase the risk of weight regain after intentional weight loss by driving disinhibited eating and reducing behavioral adherence.
If you are struggling to maintain weight loss, look beyond just calories. Assess your stress levels, mental health, and your physical environment (food access, neighborhood safety). High stress and poor food environments are proven drivers of weight regain. Addressing these external and psychological factors is essential for long-term success, not just willpower.
Intentional weight loss is often followed by unintentional weight regain. The causes of weight regain are uncertain but may include a myriad of responses that result in increased hunger and decreased energy expenditure. An individual’s psychological state and social and physical environments are also thought to influence weight regain in ways that can either support or derail weight loss maintenance.
