The gut microbiome has been identified as an important factor in obesity. Some gut bacteria have been identified as modifying hypothalamic neuroendocrine pathways by affecting the secretion of gut hormones (including GLP-1, ghrelin, and PYY)... Given the key role of the gut microbiota in modulating appetite, energy homeostasis, and metabolism, it is not surprising that the microbiota is currently a target for the prevention and treatment of metabolic disorders, such as obesity.
