Individuals with high obesity genetic risk scores (GRS) experience greater initial weight loss during the first 6 months of behavioral interventions but are significantly more susceptible to weight regain during the subsequent 6 months compared to those with low GRS.
If you have a strong family history of obesity, expect to lose weight quickly when you start a diet, but be vigilant about maintenance. Your body may fight back harder to regain weight after the initial loss. Focus heavily on the strategies that help you maintain weight loss after the first 6 months, as this is where your genetic risk profile shows a tendency for regain.
These results indicate individuals with elevated obesity GRS presented greater weight loss during the initial phase of a dietary weight loss intervention but were more susceptible to weight regain than participants with low obesity GRS during the last 6-months of the intervention.
Why this rating
The study is a secondary analysis of an RCT (DRIFT) with a modest sample size (n=66), limiting statistical power and generalizability.
