Hormonal

Carbohydrate-restricted nutrition therapy (CRNT) supported by continuous remote care enables the deprescription of GLP-1 receptor agonists in people with type 2 diabetes without regression of glycemic control or body weight loss.

If you are on a GLP-1 drug (like Ozempic or Wegovy) for Type 2 Diabetes or weight, you do not necessarily have to take it forever. This study suggests that if you adopt a medically-supervised ketogenic diet (low carb, high healthy fat) and monitor your blood ketones, you may be able to stop the drug while keeping your weight and blood sugar stable. The key is that the diet reduces hunger hormones, doing the job the drug was doing, allowing you to step off the medication without regaining weight.

These results demonstrate that CRNT in a continuous remote care model provides an effective GLP-1 step-off and maintenance therapy, allowing patients to discontinue GLP-1 while maintaining body weight loss and glycemia below therapeutic targets.

Why this rating

The study is a retrospective, propensity-score matched cohort study (real-world data), not a randomized controlled trial, introducing potential confounding despite matching.
