An 8-week Very Low Carbohydrate Diet (VLCD) in older adults with obesity promotes significantly greater loss of visceral adipose tissue (VAT) and intermuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) compared to a standard low-fat diet, while preserving skeletal muscle mass.

If you are an older adult with obesity, switching to a very low-carbohydrate diet (less than 10% of calories from carbs) for 8 weeks can help you lose visceral and intermuscular fat much faster than a standard low-fat diet, without losing your actual muscle mass. You don't need to count calories strictly; simply prioritizing fats and proteins while keeping carbs very low tends to naturally reduce calorie intake and improve insulin sensitivity.

The VLCD group experienced ~ 3-fold greater loss in VAT compared to the LFD group (− 22.8% vs − 1.0%, p < 0.001) and a greater decrease in thigh-IMAT (− 24.4% vs − 1.0%, p < 0.01)... The VLCD group also had significantly greater thigh skeletal muscle (SM) at 8 weeks following adjustment for change in total fat mass.

Why this rating

Randomized clinical trial with objective measures (MRI, clamps), but small sample size (n=34) and short duration (8 weeks).
