Bariatric surgery in patients with excess obesity and type 2 diabetes leads to significant resolution of diabetes and reduced mortality compared to matched controls.
If you have excess obesity (BMI >30) and type 2 diabetes, bariatric surgery offers a significantly higher chance of diabetes resolution (36%) compared to standard care (13%). Consider it if lifestyle changes are insufficient.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
in the Swedish Obese Subjects study, a 10-year follow up of individuals undergoing bariatric surgery, 36% of subjects with diabetes had resolution of diabetes compared with 13% of matched control subjects.
Why this rating
Based on a 10-year follow-up of a prospective cohort study (Swedish Obese Subjects), which is high-quality observational data.

- Intensive lifestyle interventions (diet and exercise) in obese type 2 diabetic patients improve quality of life, glycemic control, and metabolic syndrome markers, but do not significantly reduce cardiovascular mortality or morbidity compared to control groups.Good
- Intentional modest weight loss (10–13 kg) in overweight type 2 diabetic patients is associated with a significant reduction in total mortality, whereas unintentional weight loss increases mortality risk.Moderate
