Bariatric surgery (RYGB, SG, LAGB, BPD) significantly improves Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) remission and lowers HbA1c levels compared to medical/lifestyle management (MT) in mid- to long-term follow-up.
For individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and obesity, bariatric surgery (specifically RYGB, SG, LAGB, or BPD) is significantly more effective than medical management or lifestyle changes alone for achieving diabetes remission and lowering HbA1c levels over the long term. While surgery carries risks and requires lifelong monitoring, it offers a superior path to metabolic health compared to non-surgical approaches for this population.
RYGB, LAGB, BPD, SG, as compared with MT, were all significantly associated with the remission of T2DM and HbA1c levels.
Why this rating
Based on 11 RCTs, but limited by small sample sizes for some procedures (e.g., BPD n=20) and lack of blinding.
