Energy balance

Energy restriction, rather than carbohydrate restriction itself, is the primary driver of adverse symptoms (keto-flu) during the induction phase of low-carbohydrate diets.

If you experience 'keto-flu' or withdrawal symptoms, check your calorie intake first. You may be eating too little. Ensuring energy sufficiency can reduce these symptoms more effectively than adjusting carb levels alone.

GoodQualifiesHIGH confidence
energy restriction did occur, and it was more strongly associated with the magnitude of carbohydrate withdrawal effects than any other factor.

Why this rating

Strong observational finding within an RCT; energy restriction was a significant predictor of symptom magnitude.
