Skeletal muscle UCP3 gene expression is negatively correlated with BMI and positively correlated with resting metabolic rate (RMR) in humans, suggesting that reduced UCP3 expression contributes to lower energy expenditure and obesity risk.

we recently showed a negative correlation between skeletal muscle UCP3 expression and BMI, and a positive correlation between UCP3 mRNA levels and RMR in Pima Indians... Assuming that mRNA levels reflect UCP3 protein concentrations and activity, these data indicate that reduced skeletal muscle UCP3 may result in a reduced RMR. Because a low relative RMR is a predisposing factor for weight gain, it was expected that individuals with low UCP3 gene expression would have increased BMI
