Energy balance

A multimodal lifestyle intervention combining energy-restricted diet (plate model) and increased physical activity produces limited, non-sustained weight loss (~2.5 kg) in primary care settings, with no significant difference between intensive and standard care protocols.

Standard lifestyle advice (diet and exercise) in primary care leads to modest weight loss (approx. 2.5 kg) over a year, regardless of how much extra support or counseling you receive. While this is better than doing nothing, it is often insufficient for significant health improvements, and maintaining the regimen is difficult for most people. Focus on sustainable habits rather than intensive, short-term protocols.

ModerateQualifiesMEDIUM confidence
A multimodal intervention to promote a diet with limited energy intake and increased physical activity had limited effects on body weight among patients in a Swedish primary care setting. More extensive advice and more frequent visits made no significant difference to the outcome.

Why this rating

Randomized controlled trial, but compromised by high drop-out rates (42%) and small sample size, leading to non-significant p-values.
