Short-term body mass manipulation (SBM) in powerlifting should be limited to approximately 3% body mass loss when the weigh-in-to-competition window is two hours, as larger losses impair rehydration capacity and performance.
If you must cut weight for a powerlifting meet with a 2-hour weigh-in, do not lose more than 3% of your body weight. Losing more than this amount makes it physically impossible to rehydrate and refuel enough to perform safely and effectively in the short window available. Focus on water loading and sodium manipulation within this 3% limit rather than extreme dehydration.
In the case of experienced athletes... more aggressive manipulation may be considered, but generally not in excess of 3% body mass, which is proposed as an upper limit following a two hour weigh-in [7].
Why this rating
Based on a narrative review of survey data and physiological principles rather than a single high-quality RCT specifically on powerlifting outcomes.

- Gastrointestinal content reduction via low-fiber diets is a safe and effective first-line SBM strategy that can reduce body mass by 0.5-2% without impairing performance.Moderate
- Post-weigh-in rehydration should involve consuming 125-150% of lost body mass in fluids containing specific electrolytes (1700mg Na, 800mg K, 2300mg Cl, 13g CHO per liter) to maximize absorption and retention.Moderate
