Homogenizing fecal samples (via blending or pneumatic mixing) significantly reduces intra-individual variation in detected bacterial diversity compared to sampling small, non-homogenized aliquots, thereby improving the reliability of microbiome assessments.

If you are analyzing gut microbiota from stool samples, do not just take a tiny piece from one spot. Mix the entire sample thoroughly (homogenize) before extracting DNA. This step is crucial to get a consistent and accurate picture of the bacteria present, as bacteria are not evenly distributed throughout the stool.
