Homeostatic feedback control of energy intake increases by approximately 100 kcal/day for every kilogram of weight lost, acting as a proportional feedback system that significantly counteracts weight loss efforts.
When you lose weight, your body biologically pushes you to eat more—specifically, about 100 extra calories per day for every kilogram lost. This drive is stronger than your metabolic slowdown. To maintain weight loss, you must actively counteract this proportional increase in appetite, as it will naturally lead to weight regain if left unchecked.
We discovered that weight loss leads to a proportional homeostatic drive to increase energy intake above baseline by ~100 kcal/day per kg of lost weight – an amount more than 3-fold larger than the corresponding energy expenditure adaptations.
Why this rating
The study uses a validated mathematical model on a large, free-living cohort (n=153) over 52 weeks, though it is restricted to patients with type 2 diabetes.
