High consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is associated with a significantly increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, independent of body mass index in some contexts, driven by high energy density and rapid carbohydrate absorption.
Limit or eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages. The evidence strongly links daily consumption of sugary drinks to a significantly higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Focus on replacing these with water or unsweetened alternatives to reduce rapid carbohydrate intake and overall energy density.
In a study following over 50,000 women for 8 years, consumption of ≥1 SSB per day was associated with an 83% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared with consumption of <1 SSB per day, with BMI being a significant mediator of that risk... demonstrated a 26% greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes in individuals in the highest category of SSB intake compared with those in smallest category of intake.

Based on multiple large prospective cohort studies (over 300,000 participants pooled) and consistent observational data, though causality is harder to prove than in RCTs.
