Higher trunk adiposity is significantly associated with an increased risk of having two or more cardiometabolic risk factors (high blood pressure, low HDL, high triglycerides, high glucose) in both white and African American adults, whereas higher leg adiposity is associated with a decreased risk in these populations.

Focus on body composition distribution, not just total weight. High trunk fat (belly area) is a strong predictor of metabolic issues, while higher leg fat appears protective. While you cannot easily choose where to lose fat, understanding that trunk adiposity is the primary driver of risk highlights the importance of visceral fat reduction strategies over simple caloric restriction if leg mass is preserved.
