High intake of saturated fatty acids from dairy foods is associated with neutral or negative (protective) associations with cardiovascular disease risk, unlike SFAs from other sources which may increase risk.

You do not need to restrict dairy foods to manage heart health risk. While general guidelines limit saturated fats, evidence suggests that the specific fats found in dairy (like C15:0 and C17:0) are associated with neutral or even protective effects on cardiovascular disease, unlike saturated fats from other sources.

Dairy foods are often a major contributor to dietary intake of SFA, and since many dietary guidelines contain restrictions on SFA intake, this can lead to a moderation of dairy food intake despite meta-analyses generally showing dairy to have a neutral or negative association with CVDs.

Why this rating

Supported by specific cohort studies (EPIC) and meta-analyses distinguishing dairy SFA from other sources.
