This benefit persists for at least 10 years after treatment stops, highlighting the importance of not delaying effective therapy.
The 10-year extension post intervention in The UK Prospective Diabetes Study (UKPDS) reported a significant 15% reduction in myocardial infarction (MI) and 13% reduction in all-cause mortality among patients with type 2 diabetes receiving intensive therapy (sulphonylurea-insulin) compared to controls [9].
