Energy balance
Intermittent fasting variants (ADF, TWF, TRE) produce weight and fat loss effects equivalent to daily caloric restriction (DCR) when total energy intake is matched, with no inherent metabolic advantage to fasting timing.
Use intermittent fasting if it helps you eat less, not because you think it burns fat faster. If you can maintain a caloric deficit with standard meal timing, you will lose fat at the same rate. Prioritize protein intake and resistance training to protect muscle, as fasting does not inherently spare muscle.
When viewing the IF data in aggregate, comparisons to DCR show similar effectiveness for weight/fat loss and improving cardiometabolic health. The underlying mechanism behind these benefits is IF’s facilitation of decreased energy intake and/or the prevention of overeating.
Why this rating
Based on a narrative review of multiple RCTs and meta-analyses, including a rigorous trial isolating energy balance.
