Lifestyle interventions for type 2 diabetes prevention in women with a history of gestational diabetes are only effective in reducing T2DM risk if participants have a baseline mean BMI of 30 kg/m2 or higher.
If you have a history of gestational diabetes and a BMI of 30 or higher, lifestyle interventions (diet and exercise) are highly effective at preventing type 2 diabetes. If your BMI is lower, these interventions may not significantly reduce your T2DM risk, though they may still help with weight management.
The subgroup analysis of T2DM showed that lifestyle interventions only effectively reduced T2DM in studies in which the participants’ baseline mean BMI was 30 kg/m2 or above (RR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.33, 0.79) but not in those which included participants with a mean BMI of less than 30 kg/m2
Why this rating
Based on subgroup analysis of meta-analyzed RCTs with statistical significance (p=0.028).
