Energy balance
A daily caloric deficit of at least 600 kcal, achieved through dietary intervention, is the foundational mechanism for sustainable weight loss and can induce type 2 diabetes remission.
To lose weight, you must consume fewer calories than you burn. Aim for a daily deficit of 600 kcal. You can achieve this through various diets (Mediterranean, low-carb, etc.), but the key is choosing one you can sustain. If you have type 2 diabetes, a more aggressive low-energy diet under medical supervision may help achieve remission.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines recommend a calorie deficit of at least 600 kcal/day for sustainable weight loss.
Why this rating
Supported by NICE guidelines and the DiRECT RCT showing diabetes remission.
