High-bar and low-bar back squats produce equivalent muscle activation (EMG) during 6-RM sets, making both valid for muscular development despite kinematic differences.

If your goal is building muscle, you can use either high-bar or low-bar squats. They activate the same muscles when you lift to failure (6 reps). Choose the style that feels better for your joints or allows you to lift more weight for your strength goals.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
No significant differences in muscle activation were found between conditions. Thus, our data suggests gross muscular adaptations between barbell placements may be similar over time, and therefore, from a muscular development standpoint, both squat styles are valid.
