Intensive lifestyle interventions combining caloric restriction and moderate-intensity physical activity significantly reduce Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) severity and can lead to remission in overweight or obese adults, with a linear dose-response relationship between weight loss magnitude and improvement in Apnea-Hypopnea Index (AHI).
If you have OSA and are overweight, losing weight is the most effective way to reduce its severity. Aim for a sustained weight loss of 10% or more through a combination of a reduced-calorie diet (1200-1800 kcal/day) and at least 175 minutes of moderate exercise per week. While CPAP is important, it doesn't fix the underlying obesity; combining it with these lifestyle changes offers the best chance for remission and long-term health.
