A pinitol-enriched beverage (PEB) derived from carob pods significantly reduces blood glucose levels in individuals with impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) compared to a sucrose-enriched beverage (SEB).
If you have impaired glucose tolerance, substituting your regular sugary drinks with a pinitol-enriched beverage (containing ~4g pinitol per 500ml) for 6 weeks may help lower your fasting blood glucose levels compared to drinking sucrose-sweetened beverages. This substitution works by modulating insulin secretion pathways rather than just reducing calorie intake.
Six weeks of pinitol-enriched beverage intake induced a significant decrease in glucose levels both in IGT and healthy subjects (P = 0.03). On the contrary, sucrose intake induced an increase in glucose levels in both groups of volunteers (P = 0.03; Table 2; Supplemental Figure S1).
Why this rating
The study includes human proteomic data, animal validation, and a proof-of-concept trial, but the human sample size for the proteomic analysis is small (N=6 per group) and the clinical validation relies on animal models for mechanistic depth.
