Genetic predisposition to obesity, measured by a cumulative score of five specific SNPs (FTO, TMEM18, MC4R, SEC16B, BDNF), does not significantly predict weight loss outcomes in adults undergoing behavioral weight loss interventions.
Do not rely on genetic testing to predict your weight loss success. This study of nearly 600 people found that having 'obesity genes' did not stop them from losing weight, nor did it guarantee it. Behavioral interventions work regardless of these specific genetic markers. Focus on the intervention itself (diet, activity, behavior) rather than your genotype.
In conclusion there was no consistent evidence for statistically significant associations of SNPs with anthropometric changes during a behavioural intervention. It seems that other factors play a more significant in weight management than the investigated SNPs.
