Baseline levels of physical activity and fitness do not significantly predict the rate of telomere length shortening over a 5-year period in older adults, although cross-sectional associations exist.

Don't just rely on your current fitness level to protect your cells. This study suggests that *changes* in your activity and fitness over time are what matter for telomere health. If you are sedentary, increasing your leisure-time activity and functional fitness may help slow cellular aging, even if you were previously active.
