Energy balance
A 1-year aerobic exercise intervention of moderate-to-vigorous intensity (approx. 178.5 min/week) significantly reduces total body fat, intra-abdominal fat, and subcutaneous abdominal fat in previously sedentary postmenopausal women without dietary changes.
To lose fat without changing your diet, aim for about 175 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise per week (e.g., 35 minutes, 5 days a week). Keep your intensity at a level where you can talk but not sing (70-80% of your max heart rate). This approach works for postmenopausal women, even if you are sedentary, and specifically targets dangerous belly fat.
Women in the exercise group exercised a mean of 3.6 days (s.d. = 1.3) per week and 178.5 min (s.d. = 76.1) per week... Changes in all measures of adiposity favored exercisers relative to controls (P<0.001). The mean difference between groups was: -1.8 kg for body weight; -2.0 kg for total body fat; -14.9 cm2 for intra-abdominal fat area; and -24.1 cm2 for subcutaneous abdominal fat area.
Why this rating
Randomized controlled trial with a large sample size (n=320), objective imaging measures (DXA, CT), and long duration (1 year).
