For obese postmenopausal women, a 6-month program of modest calorie cutting (250-350 kcal/day) combined with regular, low-intensity walking (50-60% of max heart rate) is highly effective at reversing metabolic syndrome. The key is fat loss, not high-intensity cardio. This approach also helps preserve muscle mass, which is critical for older adults.
WL+LEX reduced body weight (MetSyn: −5% vs non-MetSyn: −7%) and fat mass (−11% vs −15%)... Reductions in fat mass best predicted resolution of MetSyn (p = .04).
