Sulfur amino acid restriction (SAAR) induces transcriptional remodeling in white adipose tissue (WAT), upregulating ribosomal processes and downregulating structural components, without significantly altering classical metabolic risk biomarkers like lipids or glucose.
While you won't see immediate changes in your cholesterol or blood sugar, your fat tissue is biologically changing at the genetic level. Specifically, your cells are adjusting their protein synthesis machinery (ribosomes) and structural components, which may support long-term metabolic health.
In WAT, 20 genes were upregulated whereas 24 genes were downregulated (FDR < 5%) in the SAAR group compared to controls. Generally applicable gene set enrichment analyses revealed that processes associated with ribosomes were upregulated, whereas processes related to structural components were downregulated.
Why this rating
Exploratory outcome with gene expression data; sample size for gene analysis was smaller (n=51) and it is a secondary endpoint.

More from this paper
- An 8-week sulfur amino acid restriction (SAAR) diet (~2 g/day) in humans with overweight or obesity produces significantly greater weight loss (~20% greater) compared to a control diet (~5.6 g/day), despite maintaining similar resting metabolic rates.Good
- Sulfur amino acid restriction (SAAR) significantly decreases serum leptin levels and increases plasma ketone bodies (beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate) compared to a control diet, indicating a shift in metabolic fuel usage.Good
