Energy balance
Short-term modified alternate-day fasting (ADF) combined with moderate calorie restriction on feeding days significantly reduces body weight, systolic/diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL, and fasting blood sugar in obese women.
For obese women, a 4-week program of modified alternate-day fasting (eating very little on 3 days and ~1600-1700 calories on 4 days) can effectively reduce weight, blood pressure, and bad cholesterol. This approach may be easier to stick with than daily dieting because it allows for less restricted eating on most days.
These findings suggest that short time CR plus ADF is a viable dietary option to help obese individuals lose weight and decrease systemic blood pressure and some CAD risk factors.
Why this rating
Small sample size (n=26), short duration (4 weeks), and lack of a control group limit generalizability.
