Chronic sleep restriction (3-7 hours/night) causes performance degradation that stabilizes at a reduced level, and this adaptive state persists for several days after recovery sleep, preventing full restoration of baseline performance.

If you are chronically sleeping less than 7-8 hours, your performance will drop and then stabilize at a lower level. Getting back to 8 hours of sleep will not immediately fix your performance; it takes several days, and even then, you may not return to your original baseline. Prioritize consistent, adequate sleep to avoid this 'adaptive cap' on your cognitive capacity.
