Your biological age, as measured by DNA methylation patterns, may be a better predictor of your lifespan than your actual age. A higher 'epigenetic age' (meaning your DNA looks older than your chronological age) is linked to a higher risk of death, even if you don't have common diseases like diabetes or high blood pressure. While you cannot directly 'take' this biomarker, the finding suggests that maintaining health through lifestyle factors might help keep your biological age closer to your chronological age, potentially reducing mortality risk.
A 5-year higher Δage is associated with a 21% higher mortality risk, adjusting for age and sex. After further adjustments for childhood IQ, education, social class, hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and APOE e4 status, there is a 16% increased mortality risk for those with a 5-year higher Δage.
