Senescent cells contribute to aging and age-related diseases through the Senescence-Associated Secretory Phenotype (SASP), which promotes a pro-inflammatory milieu.

While direct 'senolytic' treatments are not yet standard, lifestyle factors that reduce cellular stress (exercise, healthy diet) may help minimize the accumulation of senescent cells.

GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Senescent cells increase with age and are considered important contributors to the pro-inflammatory phenotype... The SASP consists of a complex combination of growth factors, proteases, chemokines, matrix metalloproteinases, and is particularly enriched in pro-inflammatory cytokines, especially IL-6.
