Faecalibacterium prausnitzii levels are significantly lower in obese individuals with Type 2 Diabetes and are negatively correlated with inflammatory markers (hs-CRP, IL-6), suggesting its role in reducing low-grade inflammation independently of calorie intake.

Low levels of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii are linked to higher inflammation in obese people with diabetes. Surgery helps restore this bacteria, which may help lower inflammation. This benefit appears to happen regardless of how much the patient eats, suggesting the surgery itself creates a gut environment that supports this beneficial bacteria.
