Acute negative energy balance via a very-low-energy diet (approx. 600 kcal/day) reverses type 2 diabetes by normalizing beta-cell function and hepatic insulin sensitivity, associated with a rapid reduction in liver and pancreatic fat.
If you have recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, your condition may not be permanent. This study suggests that adopting a strict, very-low-calorie diet (around 600 calories per day, supervised) can rapidly reduce fat in your liver and pancreas, potentially restoring your body's ability to regulate blood sugar and insulin normally. This is not a standard weight-loss diet but a specific medical intervention that should be undertaken with professional supervision.
This study demonstrates that the twin defects of beta cell failure and insulin resistance that underlie type 2 diabetes can be reversed by acute negative energy balance alone... The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the abnormalities of insulin secretion and insulin resistance that underlie type 2 diabetes have a single, common aetiology, i.e. excess lipid accumulation in the liver and pancreas.
