Biological aging, defined as the rate of physiological deterioration across multiple organ systems, can be quantified in young adults (ages 26-38) who are free of age-related chronic diseases, and this accelerated aging is associated with earlier physical, cognitive, and subjective health decline.

You can measure your biological age using validated biomarkers (like the 18-biomarker panel used in this study) even in your 30s. If your biological age is higher than your chronological age, it indicates faster physiological deterioration, which is linked to earlier cognitive and physical decline. This highlights the importance of early lifestyle interventions to slow this pace before chronic diseases develop.

We studied aging in 954 young humans... tracking multiple biomarkers across three time points spanning their third and fourth decades of life... Young individuals of the same chronological age varied in their 'biological aging' (declining integrity of multiple organ systems). Already, before midlife, individuals who were aging more rapidly were less physically able, showed cognitive decline and brain aging, self-reported worse health, and looked older.
