The combination of high body mass index and low physical activity results in a substantially elevated risk of colon cancer, significantly higher than either factor alone.
Do not rely on exercise alone to offset the risks of excess weight. The combination of high body mass and low activity creates a synergistic risk for colon cancer. To minimize risk, aim for both regular physical activity and a healthy body weight, particularly reducing abdominal fat.
GoodSupportsHIGH confidence
Men categorized with both a high body mass and a low level of physical activity (defined by extreme tertiles) had an age-adjusted relative risk of 4.90 (CI, 2.59 to 9.27) relative to those in the low body mass and high activity level tertiles.
Why this rating
Prospective cohort data showing a strong interaction effect.

- Higher levels of leisure-time physical activity are associated with a significantly reduced risk of developing colon cancer in men, with those in the highest activity quintile having approximately half the risk of those in the lowest.Good
- Abdominal obesity, measured by waist circumference and waist-to-hip ratio, is a strong independent risk factor for colon cancer and large adenomas, increasing risk even after adjusting for overall body mass index and physical activity levels.Good
