Habitual consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is associated with a significantly greater incidence of type 2 diabetes, independent of adiposity.
To lower your risk of type 2 diabetes, reduce your intake of sugar-sweetened beverages. Each daily serving increases your risk by approximately 13%, even if you maintain a healthy weight. Switching to artificially sweetened drinks or fruit juice does not remove this risk and is not a recommended strategy for prevention.
