Longevity benefits from caloric restriction and resveratrol are not independent events; they both work by triggering autophagy (cellular cleanup) via Sirtuin-1. If your cellular cleanup machinery (autophagy) is broken, neither intervention will extend your life. Focus on maintaining metabolic health and cellular integrity, as these are the prerequisites for these interventions to work.
We conclude that autophagy is universally required for the lifespan-prolonging effects of caloric restriction and pharmacological Sirtuin-1 activators.
