Daily intraperitoneal administration of Panax ginseng berry extract (150 mg/kg) for 12 days normalizes fasting blood glucose and significantly improves insulin-stimulated glucose disposal in obese, insulin-resistant (ob/ob) mice.
This study shows that Panax ginseng berry extract can significantly improve blood sugar control and insulin sensitivity in obese, diabetic mice. The active component, ginsenoside Re, was also effective at lowering blood sugar, though it did not cause weight loss. While this is an animal study using injections, it suggests that ginseng berry extract may be a potent supplement for managing blood glucose levels in individuals with insulin resistance.
On day 12, 150 mg/kg extract–treated ob/ob mice became normoglycemic (137 (cid:1) 6.7 mg/dl) and had significantly improved glucose tolerance... The rate of insulin-stimulated glucose disposal in ob/ob mice was more than double relative to the vehicle-treated ob/ob mice (112 (cid:1) 19.1 vs. 52 (cid:1) 11.8 (cid:2)mol (cid:1) kg(cid:3)1 (cid:1) min(cid:3)1 for the vehicle group, P < 0.01).
Why this rating
The study uses a well-established animal model (ob/ob mice) with rigorous methodology (hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps), but results are not directly translatable to humans without clinical trials.

- Initial treatment for type 2 diabetes should be a combination of metformin and either an SGLT-2 inhibitor or a GLP-1 receptor agonist to achieve cardiorenal protection, rather than monotherapy or older agents like sulfonylureas.Strong
