The presence of cold-activated brown adipose tissue (BAT) in adults is negatively correlated with age and positively associated with lower adiposity, suggesting that BAT activity protects against age-related body fat accumulation.
As you age, your body's ability to burn fat using brown fat (BAT) naturally declines. This decline is linked to higher body fat levels. While you cannot reverse aging, understanding that BAT exists and is active in many adults suggests that strategies to activate it (like cold exposure) might help manage weight gain in older age, although this study only shows correlation, not a direct intervention result.
These results suggest that decreased BAT activity may be associated with accumulation of body fat with age.
