Energy balance

Among dietary counseling interventions, those that combine diet and exercise result in statistically significantly greater weight loss during the active phase (first year) compared to diet alone, although this difference is not statistically significant during the maintenance phase.

If you want to maximize weight loss during the first year of a program, adding exercise to your dietary changes is more effective than diet alone. However, this advantage disappears once you stop the active program, so focus on sustainable habits for long-term maintenance.

At 12 months, during the active phase, participants who also exercised had statistically greater weight loss compared with those who received diet alone, but weight changes were similar in both groups at 3 and 6 months. During the maintenance phase, changes in weight were not statistically significantly different across studies, based on type of intervention.
