Individuals with prediabetes exhibit an aberrant gut microbiota profile characterized by a significant depletion of the genus Clostridium and the mucin-degrading bacterium Akkermansia muciniphila, which correlates with markers of poor metabolic health.

If you have prediabetes, your gut bacteria likely look different than those of someone with normal glucose regulation, specifically showing lower levels of beneficial bacteria like Akkermansia and Clostridium. While this is a strong indicator of metabolic stress, simply changing your diet to target these bacteria may not be enough to reverse insulin resistance without addressing broader metabolic factors, as the microbiota change alone does not appear to cause the glucose intolerance in animal models.
