Living in neighborhoods with fewer supermarkets and more fast-food restaurants increases the likelihood of obesity in ethnic minority and low-income children due to reduced access to affordable, healthful foods and increased availability of energy-dense options.
In low-income and minority neighborhoods, access to fresh, affordable food is often limited, and fast-food options are abundant. To mitigate this, support or advocate for school programs that provide free or low-cost fruits and vegetables. Encourage families to utilize any available supermarkets, even if fewer, and be aware that corner stores may have higher prices for healthy items. Policy interventions to increase supermarket availability and restrict fast-food density are critical.
Compared with more affluent communities, minority and low-income communities have fewer than average supermarkets and convenience stores that stock fresh, good-quality, affordable foods... African American and low-income neighborhoods also have many fast-food restaurants.
