Supplementation with high molecular weight wheat arabinoxylan (AX) at 10% of diet weight for 4 weeks counteracts high-fat diet-induced obesity, insulin resistance, and hypercholesterolemia in mice by restoring gut microbiota composition (increasing Bifidobacteria, Roseburia, and Bacteroides/Prevotella) and improving gut barrier function.

In a mouse model of obesity, adding 10% wheat arabinoxylan to a high-fat diet for 4 weeks significantly reduced body weight gain, fat mass, and improved insulin resistance and cholesterol levels. This effect was linked to an increase in beneficial gut bacteria (Bifidobacteria, Roseburia, Bacteroides/Prevotella) and improved gut barrier function. While this is animal research, it suggests that specific prebiotic fibers may help mitigate some negative metabolic effects of a high-fat diet.
