Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) provided by a registered dietitian is an effective, evidence-based component of diabetes treatment that improves glycemic control (A1C reduction of 0.3-2.0%) and cardiovascular risk factors, comparable to pharmacologic interventions.
Ask your doctor for a referral to a Registered Dietitian (RD) specializing in diabetes. You should expect 3-4 initial visits (45-90 mins each) within the first 6 months, plus annual check-ins. This is a covered benefit and is as effective as many medications for lowering blood sugar.
WeakSupportsHIGH confidence
Nutrition therapy is recommended for all people with type 1 and type 2 diabetes as an effective component of the overall treatment plan. (A)... Documented decreases in A1C observed in these studies are type 1 diabetes: -0.3 to -2%... and type 2 diabetes: -0.5 to -2%... Reported A1C reductions are similar or greater than what would be expected with treatment with currently available pharmacologic treatments for diabetes.
Why this rating
Grade A evidence based on multiple RCTs and systematic reviews.

- There is no single ideal macronutrient distribution (carbohydrate, protein, fat percentages) for all people with diabetes; eating patterns should be individualized based on preferences, metabolic goals, and cultural factors.Limited
- For overweight/obese adults with Type 2 Diabetes, intensive lifestyle interventions focusing on energy restriction and weight loss (6-8.5% body weight) improve glycemic control, blood pressure, and lipids, with the greatest benefits seen in those early in the disease process.Weak
