Weight loss of approximately 10% in overweight patients with OSA leads to clinically significant improvement in the Apnea-Hypopnea Index, although it rarely normalizes the index completely.

If you are overweight and have OSA, losing about 10% of your body weight can significantly improve your breathing interruptions. However, do not expect this to cure the condition entirely; it usually results in modest improvement rather than normalization. Weight loss should be a core part of your management plan alongside CPAP if prescribed.

Because a decrease in body weight of as little as 10% has been associated with clinically significant improvement in the apnea– hypopnea index (82), weight loss should be recommended to overweight patients with obstructive sleep apnea. Although the amount of weight loss seems to correlate directly with reduction in sleep-disordered breathing (7), studies have demonstrated modest improvement in rather than normalization of the apnea– hypopnea index.
